What to Expect During the IVF Process
Initial Consultation
Your IVF journey begins with a consultation where you’ll meet with a fertility specialist to review your medical history, discuss any previous treatments, and outline your goals. This is also your opportunity to ask questions and explore whether IVF is right for you.
Pre-Treatment Testing
Before starting treatment, you’ll undergo a series of fertility evaluations. For women, this includes hormone blood tests and ultrasound scans. Men provide a semen sample to assess sperm count and quality. These tests help our team design a personalized plan for your IVF cycle.
Ovarian Stimulation
You’ll begin hormone treatment to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. This typically involves daily injections for 10–14 days, with regular monitoring to track progress. Ultrasounds and blood tests ensure your body is responding well.
Egg Retrieval
Once your eggs are ready, you’ll receive a trigger shot, and about 36 hours later, the eggs are collected through a minor surgical procedure performed under anesthesia. Most patients return home the same day.
Fertilization and Embryo Culture
The eggs are combined with sperm in the lab. In some cases, ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) may be used to assist fertilization. Fertilized eggs (now embryos) are monitored over several days as they grow. Our lab team follows strict protocols and leverages high-quality equipment to support healthy embryo development under optimal conditions.
Embryo Transfer
After 3–5 days, the best-quality embryo(s) are selected and transferred into the uterus using a thin catheter. This is a simple, non-surgical procedure that usually doesn’t require anesthesia. Any remaining healthy embryos can be frozen for future use.
Luteal Phase Support
Following the transfer, you’ll take medication (typically progesterone) to support the uterine lining and improve the chances of implantation. This stage is closely monitored by your care team.
Pregnancy Test and Early Monitoring
A blood test is done about two weeks after the transfer to check for pregnancy. Our clinic provides guidance and expert care during this emotionally sensitive stage. If the result is positive, we’ll continue to monitor you through early pregnancy with ultrasounds and check-ins to ensure everything is progressing well.
Commonly Asked Questions About the IVF Process
How long does the IVF process take from start to finish?
A full IVF cycle usually spans 4–6 weeks, including consultation, stimulation, retrieval, and embryo transfer. Additional time may be needed for initial testing and multiple attempts.
Does egg retrieval hurt?
The procedure is performed under anesthesia, so you won’t feel pain during the retrieval. Some mild cramping or soreness may occur afterward.
What happens to unused embryos?
Any healthy embryos not used in the initial transfer can be frozen for future use or donated, depending on your preference and clinic policy.
Can I return to normal activities during IVF?
Most patients can continue normal routines, but you may need to adjust your schedule during monitoring or recovery periods. Your doctor will guide you based on your health and treatment plan.
