IUI Process

How Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Works

The IUI process is a straightforward, minimally invasive fertility treatment that can significantly increase the chance of pregnancy in certain patients. At Bangkok Central Clinic, we’ve guided many individuals and couples through this procedure with personalized care and consistently high clinical standards.

Our experienced fertility team carefully times and performs every step of IUI to give you the best possible chance of conception. Whether you’re using a partner’s sperm or donor sperm, the process is safe, efficient, and supported by years of hands-on experience.

A step-by-step flowchart detailing the five main stages of the IUI procedure.

Step-by-Step Breakdown of the IUI Procedure

Initial Consultation and Evaluation

Your journey begins with a fertility consultation, where your medical history, hormone levels, reproductive health, and sperm parameters are assessed. We may recommend further testing to confirm IUI is the most suitable option.

Ovulation Monitoring

Because timing is critical, your cycle will be closely monitored through blood tests and ultrasound scans to detect ovulation. In some cases, you may be prescribed medication to stimulate egg development and increase your chances of success.

Sperm Collection and Preparation

On the day of insemination, the sperm sample is collected, either freshly through ejaculation or from a frozen sample. In our sterile lab, the sample is “washed” to remove impurities and concentrate the most motile sperm, improving the likelihood of fertilization.

Insemination Procedure

The insemination itself is a quick and nearly painless outpatient procedure. Using a speculum, the doctor accesses the cervix and gently inserts a thin catheter into the uterus. The prepared sperm sample is then introduced directly into the uterine cavity.

Rest and Aftercare

Following the procedure, patients typically rest for a short time before returning to daily activities. You may experience mild cramping or spotting, which is normal and usually subsides quickly.

Pregnancy Testing and Follow-Up

Approximately two weeks after the procedure, you’ll return to the clinic for a pregnancy test. If successful, early monitoring will begin to ensure everything is progressing well. If not, your doctor will discuss the next steps with you and whether to repeat the cycle or consider alternative treatments.

Commonly Asked Questions About IUI Success Rates

While some patients conceive after one cycle, many fertility experts recommend trying three cycles before evaluating other treatment options like IVF.

Yes. Age is one of the most significant factors affecting success. Women under 35 tend to have better outcomes, although this can vary based on overall reproductive health.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and following your doctor’s guidance on nutrition and medication can all support better outcomes.

IUI is less invasive and often used for less complex fertility cases. IVF typically has higher success rates but is also more involved. Your doctor will help you decide which option suits your situation.
